New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani received widespread criticism on Friday after publishing a Spanish-language video detailing how residents should handle encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The post, shared on X, garnered more than 7 million views in a short period. In the clip, Mamdani outlines specific legal rights for individuals facing ICE. He states that agents cannot enter private spaces such as homes, schools, hospitals, or workplace areas without a judicial warrant signed by a judge. The mayor also reminds viewers of their right to remain silent and offers practical tips for the interaction. He notes that these are frightening times for many people.
The video drew immediate attention from conservative figures on social media who argued the guidance encourages obstruction of federal law enforcement. Rep. Brandon Gill of Texas noted that Mamdani became a citizen less than a decade ago and is now coaching residents in a foreign language on avoiding deportation. Actor Dean Cain posted that people who are not in the country illegally have no reason to fear ICE and called the mayor dangerous. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah observed that the video does not urge anyone to abide by U.S. laws because it was not made for the benefit of the general population. Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina stated that if a person is here illegally, they are not a New Yorker. Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio labeled the move treason. Fox News commentator Tomi Lahren criticized foreign-born Democrats for instructing individuals on how to evade the law. Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, described the statement as dangerous incitement filled with falsehoods that could put lives at risk.
Mamdani has maintained a firm stance against ICE and the Trump administration's immigration enforcement agenda throughout his career. During his campaign and after taking office, he called for the abolition of the agency. He stated that the New York Police Department would not assist ICE with civil immigration enforcement. He has described ICE operations as harmful to immigrant communities.
The mayor signed an executive order to strengthen New York City's sanctuary policies. This order directs city agencies to limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities and protect personal information. It establishes protocols for handling ICE requests to access city property or records. The order also requires expanded 'know your rights' materials and training for city employees. Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani's office for comment.
